Sliding door. Mechanism of sliding doors

Sliding door is a construction consisting of door leaf, door frame, complete set of guide accessories and cassette. Such door can consist of one, two or more leaves. Door frame of sliding door is a construction fixed in the door aperture with glue and screws. Door case for sliding door is often made of unitary wood units. Door leaf is hung on the door frame. In sliding doors between rooms decorative bars (platbands) are used; they decorate and set off door aperture.

Mechanism of sliding doors along which the door actually slides, includes rollers, locking devices and restraint. Locking device and restraint are provided to stop the door from sliding too forward. Restrictor is fixed on the floor, and locking device is fixed upwards on the wall. To choose mechanism for your sliding door correctly one shall know its weight. For a door weighting from 40 to 75 kg mechanism with two rollers is the most suitable; for heavier doors one shall use four rollers. Diameter of rollers of sliding door can be different, and they will move along the guide bar fixed to the floor.

Accessories of sliding doors

Accessories of sliding doors are mostly handles. Usual handles for sliding mechanisms of doors between rooms will not suit as it is necessary that they do not prevent from door moving along or inside of the wall. Handles for sliding doors can be purchased together with complete set, or they can be ordered individually. Accessories of sliding doors include another device, which looks like a cylinder. This device is mounted into the butt end of leaf to make sliding door to slide from the wall.

Advantages and shortcomings of sliding door

The main advantage of sliding door is economy of space.

Maybe it will not be so noticeable in private houses, but in small apartments where there are sufficient space limits, sliding doors between rooms will be quite opportunely. But sliding door also let light, smells and sounds through much better. It happens because there are gaps between the door leaf and frame. Besides, to install sliding door you will have to dismantle part of the wall and to put a gypsum plasterboard to mount cassette and sliding mechanism into it.
